Peanuts and Carver: A Story of Explorer, Teacher, and Culture

How research, farmer education, and new uses of the crop came together in Carver's work with peanuts.

Culture is older than its fame

The National Park Service points to the South American origins of peanuts and their long history of use. Botanically it is a legume. Flowering occurs above the soil, and fruits develop in the ground after the lowering of a special shoot. This feature distinguishes peanuts from tree nuts, next to which we are accustomed to seeing them on the counter, and determines the sequence of agricultural work.

Path through education

George Washington Carver was born into slavery in Missouri and later educated and became an explorer and teacher. After studying in Iowa, he worked at the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama. His biography connects laboratory activities with education: interest in plants turned into systematic work, the results of which could be transferred to students and applied outside the educational institution.

One harvest is not enough

Carver studied the many uses of peanuts and other plants, including sweet potatoes and pecans. The question that lies behind such experiments is important: what can be obtained from available raw materials and how can its use be made more diverse? NPS materials mention food and industrial applications nearby. Therefore, the researcher's contribution is broader than one dish or a popular store-bought product form.

From the field to different products

In the processing described by NPS, peanuts are first removed from the soil and dried, then the beans are separated and the preparation of the raw materials is completed. Further operations depend on the purpose: whole kernel, paste or oil. Thus the history of culture continues in technology. When comparing products, it is useful to clarify the form and processing: a familiar common name does not mean the same composition, taste and method of use.
