sunflower
Sunflowers are grown for oil, snacks and peeled kernels: these are different breeding directions, and not just different seed sizes.
Peeled kernels are convenient for bread and topping; seeds for husking are sold with a shell.
Raw, dried and fried are different processing characteristics. The absence of roasting does not negate the cleaning and drying of raw materials.
History
From North America to world culture
The homeland of sunflower is North America. Russia played an important role in the development of its industrial oilseed use.
Three product lines
NDSU separates oilseed, confectionery and intermediate Conoil types to produce kernels. Selection also changes the ratio of fatty acids; it cannot be identified by the common name of the seeds.
Regions and differences
Documented growing regions
The map shows examples and important areas, not all countries or global market shares. Coordinates are approximate. The origin and characteristics of our batch are confirmed separately.
Saratov region, Russia
One of the documented large sunflower areas in the Volga region.
Regional statistics cover seed yields, not just finished food kernels.
For toppings, please check the nutritional purpose and the presence of a coating.
Rostov region, Russia
Southern production area; The USDA also notes the Krasnodar Territory and the Voronezh Region.
Country and region do not determine the grade or intensity of roasting.
Check the processing of a specific batch.
North and South Dakota, USA
Important American growing areas.
The confectionery type usually has a larger shell than the oil type.
For a recipe, buy kernels if it states the edible weight.
Buenos Aires, Argentina
The USDA describes the expansion of crops in the central and southern part of the province.
The Southern Hemisphere has a different agricultural calendar; The packing date is not the same as the harvest date.
For a large supply, check the harvest year.
Chaco, Argentina
Northern zone of sunflower, sensitive to moisture during the sowing window.
In the 2024 report, drought limited crop expansion. This is an example of the influence of a particular season.
