Cumin
Commercial cumin "seeds" are botanically fruits. Whole and ground spices give different textures and are distributed differently in a dish.
Cuminum cyminum is described here. A similar trade name for another spice does not mean the same species.
To originate a batch, supplier documents are required; The species card does not confirm the purity or variety of a particular cumin.
History
Plant of the umbrella family
A small annual plant produces umbels of white or pink flowers. The oblong ribbed fruits are traded.
Natural range and cultivation
Kew indicates a native range from Iraq to Afghanistan. Modern agricultural geography is wider and does not coincide with the natural range.
Not to be confused with “black cumin”
The Codex specifically notes that Cuminum cyminum and Nigella sativa belong to different families and should not be grouped together as one spice.
